IANA Stewardship Transition

In March 2014, the United States Department of Commerce National Telecommunications & Information Administration (NTIA) announced that it was planning to step out of stewardship of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions..

NTIA asked ICANN to convene global stakeholders to develop a proposal to transition the current role played by NTIA.

Among other things, IANA is responsible for maintaining many of the codes and numbers contained in a variety of Internet protocols developed by the IETF. The views of the IETF community are important for NTIA's evaluation of any proposal. ICANN has convened an IANA Stewardship Transition Coordination Group (ICG) to help with the transition plan, and the IETF has appointed Alissa Cooper and Jari Arkko to the group.

IETF Community Discussion

The IETF established the IANAPLAN Working Group (IANAPLAN WG) to address the topic. The IANAPLAN WG produced and the IESG approved a document as a response to the ICG's request for proposals. Interested IETF participants are encouraged to subscribe to the IANAPLAN WG mailing list at:
