Introduction 140 This testing is based on most common applications used by home users. 141 The main purpose is to check if those applications work correctly on 142 a network using MAP-T [draft-mdt-softwire-map-translation-01]. 144 Based on testing we know which applications could be used on a 145 network with MAP-T and the impact on a typical Internet user in 146 Brazil. The classification as a working application is based on user 147 experience, not on network measurements. 149 1.1. Requirements Language 151 The key words "MUST", "MUST NOT", "REQUIRED", "SHALL", "SHALL NOT", 152 "SHOULD", "SHOULD NOT", "RECOMMENDED", "MAY", and "OPTIONAL" in this 153 document are to be interpreted as described in RFC 2119 [RFC2119]. 155 2. The 181 host machine is replaced in the topology to test each operating 182 system. 184 The IPv6 router is a Linux machine with static routes to match the 185 MAP-T network topology routes. 187 NIC.br IPv4 Network is a IPv4 network with public valid IPv4 address. 188 For the MAP-T topology it is considered like IPv4 Internet, as this 189 network topology is unknown for the testing network and can not be 190 changed. 192 NIC.br IPv6 Network is a IPv6 network with public valid IPv6 address. 193 For the MAP-T topology it is considered like IPv6 Internet, as this 194 network topology is unknown for the testing network and can not be 195 changed. 197 The host may have both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, but to guarantee that 198 the translation was being tested the host received only an IPv4 199 address. If the host is assigned with an IPv6 address, this address 200 should have preference as specified on RFC6555 [RFC6555] and the 201 translation might not be tested in some cases were the application or 202 the content provider is available on IPv6. 204 2.2. Effect analysis 461 5.1. User experience 463 User experience can only be evaluated subjectively, there is no 464 quantitative rule to define if the user experience is acceptable. 465 Network delay, streaming experience and download time are similar to 466 a network without MAP-T. 468 The user experience was very good. Almost all the software and 469 websites worked correctly, the exception were the network traceroute 470 and command line FTP. 472 The traceroute is only capable to reach the MAP-T CPE and receive a 473 return message that the destination net is unreachable. 475 The command line FTP is capable to connect to the host with or 476 without authentication, create, delete and navigate folders, but it 477 is not capable list folder contents, to send or receive files in 478 active mode. 480 The bittorrent applications can't seed or share files, since there 481 isn't incoming connections to the host, it may cause some 482 difficulties and low downloading speeds. 484 5.2. Testing summary 486 The working applications had no need of a special configuration to 487 work. 489 The command line FTP doesn't work correctly because active mode 490 requeries incoming connections to specific ports without having a 491 outbound connection on those ports. When the test was made on FTP 492 passive mode on Linux, the FTP works correctly. When the test was 493 made on FTP passive mode on Windows 7 and Windows XP, the FTP didn't 494 work correctly. When using FileZilla FTP in passive mode, FTP works 495 on all tested operating systems. 497 The network traceroute doesn't work in inbound or outbound directions 498 because there is no continuity of the IPv4 network, as it is 499 interrupted by an IPv6 only network. The tool is not capable to 500 detect the hosts in this IPv6 only network and because of that the 501 traceroute doesn't succeed. 503 The testing was made with the version 1.1 of the MAP-T software 504 developed by CERNET. In this version the MAP-T CPE uses a NAT44, so 505 it is not possible to receive incoming connections even on the ports 506 assigned to the host by the address plus port division. Because of 507 that is not possible to configure a server on the host. After those 508 testing CERNET developed a new version of the software (2.2c) that is 509 capable to receive incoming connections on some ports that are 510 assigned to each CPE. 512 6. Acknowledgements 514 We would like to thank the CERNET folks for providing their MAP-T 515 software for our tests. 517 We would like to thank NIC.br for offering the infrastructure for the 518 testing. 520 Future tests will consider testing of MAP-E too that is now supported 521 in the new version of CERNET's MAP software. Other operating systems 522 (Mac OS, Android, IOS etc) and devices (mobile phones, tablets, video 523 games etc) should be tested too. 525 7. Note aout bittorrent seeders 1536 Bittorrent uses distributed queues, each seeder owns the queues for 1537 the files they have. The seeder informs the tracker that it has the 1538 file and the tracker informs the clients about this seeder. The 1539 client send messages to this announced seeder to try to download the 1540 file. With no incoming connection the bittorret fails here on the 1541 MAP-T. Despite being a possible seeder the machine doesn't upload 1542 the file and without upload, it will be considered a leech and will 1543 be penalized on future downloading speeds. This is the same problem 1544 that happens on a network with IPv4 without port forwarding.
