Introduction 66 This draft describes an extension to the SCTP sockets API (see 67 [RFC6458], [I-D.dreibholz-tsvwg-sctpsocket-multipath] [RFC4960]) 68 which allows an application to query the sender queue utilization per 69 stream. This information is necessary for applications to make 70 efficient use of a mapping of streams to dissimilar paths. A 71 detailed description including simulation results can be found in 72 [PFLDNeT2010]. 74 In particular, this API extension is useful when using the CMT-SCTP, 75 CMT/RPv1-SCTP, CMT/RPv2-SCTP and MPTCP-like extensions (see 76 [I-D.tuexen-tsvwg-sctp-multipath], [Dre2012], [PAMS2012], [PAMS2011], 77 [ConTEL2011], [SoftCOM2011], [Globecom2010]) for Concurrent Multipath 78 Transfer (CMT) with SCTP. 80 1.1. Conventions 82 The key words "MUST", "MUST NOT", "REQUIRED", "SHALL", "SHALL NOT", 83 "SHOULD", "SHOULD NOT", "RECOMMENDED", "MAY", and "OPTIONAL" in this 84 document are to be interpreted as described in [RFC2119]. 86 2. Sender Queue Info (SCTP_SQINFO) 88 This socket option obtains the maximum sender queue size (in bytes), 89 the current total sender queue utilization (in bytes) as well as the 90 current utilization per stream (in bytes). 92 The following structure is used to obtain the sender queue 93 information: 95 struct sctp_sndqueueinfo { 96 sctp_assoc_t sq_assoc_id; 97 uint32_t sq_queue_limit; 98 uint32_t sq_total_queued; 99 uint32_t sq_number_of_streams; 100 uint32_t sq_queued_on_stream[]; 101 }; 103 sq_assoc_id: This parameter is ignored for one-to-one style sockets. 104 For one-to-many style sockets this parameter indicates which 105 association the user is performing an action upon. It is an error 106 to use SCTP_{CURRENT|ALL}_ASSOC in sq_assoc_id. 108 sq_queue_limit: This field gives the maximum sender queue size in 109 bytes. 111 sq_total_queued: This field gives the current total sender queue 112 utilization in bytes. 114 sq_number_of_streams: This field gives the number of outgoing 115 streams. That is, it will contain the number of valid 116 sq_queued_on_stream entries. 118 sq_queued_on_stream: This array gives the current number of bytes 119 queued for the streams 0 to sq_number_of_streams-1. 121 Note, that the caller of getsockopt() MUST provide a 122 sctp_sndqueueinfo structure which can hold at least as many 123 sq_queued_on_stream entries as the association's number of outgoing 124 streams. Otherwise, the getsockopt() call will fail and return an 125 error. 127 3. Testbed Platform 129 A large-scale and realistic Internet testbed platform with support 130 for the multi-homing feature of the underlying SCTP protocol is 131 NorNet. A description of NorNet is provided in [PAMS2013-NorNet], 132 some further information can be found on the project website 133 [NorNet-Website]. 135 4. Security Considerations 137 Security considerations for the SCTP sockets API are described by 138 [RFC6458]. 140 5. IANA Considerations 142 This document does not require IANA actions. 144 6.
