The document expiration date should appear on the first and last page. ** The document seems to lack a 1id_guidelines paragraph about Internet-Drafts being working documents. ** The document seems to lack a 1id_guidelines paragraph about 6 months document validity -- however, there's a paragraph with a matching beginning. Internet-Drafts are working 11 documents of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), its 12 areas, and its working groups. Note that other groups may also 13 distribute working documents as Internet-Drafts. 15 Internet-Drafts are draft documents valid for a maximum of six 16 months and may be updated, replaced, or obsoleted by other 17 documents at any time. It is inappropriate to use Internet- 18 Drafts as reference material or to cite them other than as 19 ``work in progress.'' 21 To learn the current status of any Internet-Draft, please check 22 the ``1id-abstracts.txt'' listing contained in the Internet- 23 Drafts Shadow Directories on ftp.is.co.za (Africa), 24 nic.nordu.net (Europe), munnari.oz.au (Pacific Rim), 25 ds.internic.net (US East Coast), or ftp.isi.edu (US West Coast). 27 Abstract 29 This document describes Elvis Spoofing - the abuse of the 30 email account (especially by Usenet users 31 and system admninistrators), and introduces the death penalty as a 32 deterent. 34 1. Funny, ha, ha - NOT 36 It appears to be "cool", "funny", "cute" (and many other equally 37 pathetically similar phrases) to send email to someone with the 38 Sender or From address set to . Each person who 39 does this is, of course, acting entirely in a totally original 40 manner and doing "something that nobody has ever thought of before", 41 and are thinking "boy, won't this cause a laugh". 43 This misplaced belief causes the recipient to respond with an 44 equally witty reply to the email address. This 45 situation, while usually harmless, is still annoying because of the 46 volume of email sent to the "elvis@graceland.com" account. 48 Usenet users are the most problematic group. They have test 49 newsgroups to do this in. "Gee, I can post test mail and if I do it 50 from , no one will know it's me!". This would 51 be fine in itself, but each test newsgroup sends an email message 52 saying the posting has been successful. So what you say? Email is 53 harmless. 55 The majority of *.test postings that the 56 account receives contain copyright materials sold by major software 57 companies. In addition, posting large (megabytes) messages to *.test 58 newsgroups creates hundreds and hundreds of 32k "posting 59 verification" messages to be sent to the From address. 61 Not only is posting copyrighted material without the permission of 62 the copyright owner illegal, the quantity of email generated places 63 a severe strain on the intermediate internet infrastructure, as well 64 as the GRACELAND.COM mail server(s). 66 2. What to do about this 68 1. DO NOT FORGE THE EMAIL ADDRESS 69 2. DO NOT POST COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS ANYWHERE ON THE INTERNET 70 WITHOUT PERMISSION OF THE COPYRIGHT OWNER 72 3. Deterrent 74 As a deterrent to this dilemma, anyone caught forging the 75 email address will be given a virtual death 76 penalty. They may find their access to the GRACELAND.COM domain 77 permanently terminated. They may also find fines and even jail time 78 being imposed by a court of law. 80 4. Appeals 82 There is no appeals process. 84 5. Security Considerations 86 There are no known security considerations beyond those of the 87 perpetrators host being found. 89 10. Author's Address 91 Elvis The Stiff 92 email: elvis@graceland.com 94 [This document expires April 1, 1997]
