Good management requires at least a small element of 45 central authority over the delegation and allocation of the address 46 space. 48 The Internet community recognizes the Internet Assigned Numbers 49 Authority (IANA) as the appropriate entity to have the responsibility 50 for the management of the IPv6 address space. 52 The IANA will rely on the advice of the Internet Architecture Board 53 (IAB) and the Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG) in the 54 management of the IPv6 address space. 56 The IANA will delegate to regional (and other) registries the task of 57 making specific address allocations to network service providers and 58 other subregional registries. Individuals and organizations may 59 obtain address allocations directly from the appropriate regional (or 60 other) registry, or from their service provider. 62 Any revenues (such as transaction fees) received with respect to the 63 IPv6 address space should be used only for expenses related to 64 registry activities, and not to subsidize any other activities. 65 There will be no charges for the address space itself, only fees to 66 recover the registry costs. 68 Any situation in the management of the IPv6 address space that leads 69 to monopoly control or predatory practices must be avoided. 71 The IANA will develop a plan for the initial IPv6 address allocation, 72 including a provision for the automatic allocation of IPv6 addresses 73 to holders of IPv4 addresses. 75 Contact Information: 77 IAB + IESG 78 EMail: + 80 Expires: 82 15-Sep-95
